What is a mixed number?
A mixed number is a number made of a whole number and a proper fraction — for example, 2¾ or 5½. Mixed numbers are also called mixed fractions — there is no mathematical difference between the two terms.
Key conversions
- Mixed number → improper fraction: Multiply whole × denominator, add numerator. Example: 2¾ = 11/4
- Mixed number → decimal: Add whole to fraction. Example: 2¾ = 2.75
- Improper fraction → mixed number: Divide numerator by denominator, remainder is new numerator.
